St. Paul's Letter from Hell
About this episode
Dark, suffocating, and buried beneath the earth, an everyday Roman prison could evoke the ancient underworld itself.
Reconstructing the physical conditions of Paul’s imprisonment helps us encounter his letters differently. These were not abstract reflections written in comfort. They emerged from a place associated with suffering, isolation, and death.
Yet the words Paul dictated from inside that space would escape the prison, outlive the Roman Empire, and continue to be read nearly two thousand years later.
